US stocks edged lower on Thursday as mixed-income earnings kept gains, while the ECB offered only a brief boost to the markets by signaling that it would ease monetary policy in September.

Initial US jobless claims fall by 10,000 to 206,000

On the data front, the US Department of Labor said on Thursday that initial jobless claims in the United States in the week ending July 20 fell by 10,000 from last week's unaudited figures to 206,000. The four-week moving average fell by 5,750 to 213,000. Previous market analysis indicated that the number of initial jobless claims will increase by 2000 in the same time frame.

The insured unemployment rate is seasonally adjusted at 1.2% for the week ending July 13th, unchanged from the previous week.
