Asian stocks were mixed Tuesday morning as investors awaited Chinese inflation data. Investors are awaiting Chinese inflation data for August, as both the CPI and PPI are scheduled to be released at 9:30 am in Hong Kong / China.

Credit card spending in New Zealand rose 1.3% in August

New Zealand's total credit card spending rose 1.3 per cent month-on-month in August, following a 0.2 per cent decline in July, Statistics New Zealand said on Tuesday. Retail credit card spending rose 1.1% month-on-month, beating expectations for an increase of 0.5% after falling 0.1% the previous month.

Core retail spending (excluding automotive-related industries) rose 1.3 percent in August, after falling 0.4 percent in July. In real terms, retail spending on e-cards reached NZ $ 5.3 billion, up 2.8 percent (NZ $ 147 million) compared to August 2018.

 North Korea launches "unidentified projectiles"

On the political front, South Korea's joint chiefs of staff said North Korea had fired "unidentified projectiles" from the southern province of Pyongan eastward hours after it said it hoped to resume nuclear disarmament talks with the United States. Earlier, North Korean Deputy Foreign Minister Choi Sun-hui said Pyongyang was ready to resume talks with Washington in late September and noted that its country was ready to discuss all the issues the two countries had talked about in previous rounds of negotiations.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said the meetings were "always a good idea," but he could not confirm denying talks with North Korea this month.

  • The Topix rose 0.43%. Nissan Motor Co. shares jumped about 3% after its CEO Hiroto Saikawa announced his resignation as of September 16.
  • In South Korea, the Kospi rose 0.32%.
  • Elsewhere, Australia's S & P / ASX 200 Index fell 0.26%.
